Development and Communications Associate Job Description

  • Position: Development and Communications Associate

  • Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates ideally located in Colorado, U.S. (Denver-Boulder-Fort Collins area preferred). You may attend bi-weekly in-person meetings, but candidates from other regions across the U.S. are encouraged to apply and can meet virtually.

  • Schedule: Full Time (1.0) (Schedule of 0.75 time possible)

  • Reports to: Development Director 

  • Salary: $50,000-$55,000 depending on experience

  • Type: This position is a contract position, with potential to be converted to a full time position and eligible for benefits after 6 months of satisfactory employment. More details at the end of the job description.

Position Overview

TeachUNITED is seeking a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented Development and Communications Associate to join our ambitious Development Team as we grow our $2 million budget to reach even more underserved communities globally. In this role, you will be instrumental in supporting the fundraising and communications operations, particularly through grant writing, database management, and donor stewardship. You will draft grant proposals and donor communications, maintain donor records, and manage various digital and print communication projects to keep our supporters engaged. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to deepen their nonprofit fundraising experience within a supportive, remote work environment.


Roles and Responsibilities

Grant Writing and Reporting (45%)
  • Draft grant proposals and reports, customized to address the key focus areas and requirements of prospective and current donors, collaborating with other teams to generate content. Ensure proposals/reports are on time and within scope. 

  • Support the team in streamlining systems and processes to make grant reporting and information sourcing more efficient and to ensure stakeholders are informed and connected to our progress and mission. 

Communications Content Creation, Execution, and Management (20%)
  • Drafting and support with executing TU’s recurrent digital and print communications projects for philanthropic supporter audiences (biannual donor calls, annual report, email campaigns, and newsletters). This includes distribution through MailChimp and monitoring communication data post-campaign.

  • Maintain TU website, making improvements as necessary.

  • Support TU’s presence at conferences and sector events by researching events, tracking outreach and attendees, and securing TU presentation opportunities at conferences.

  • Manage creation, design, and language of donor materials as needed (ex: “About us” fliers, concept proposals, thank you notes, holiday cards)

  • Maintain donor/newsletter database within MailChimp. 


Support Core Fundraising Activities (15%)

  • Research and identify new potential funders (ex. foundations, high net worth individuals) and prepare the CEO for funder prospect meetings.

  • Research compelling data for populations served including education outcomes, needs, trends and other resources to be used in grant applications and communications.

  • Research philanthropy and education trends and in both the domestic U.S. and international development landscape.

  • Refine and maintain Salesforce database for foundation and individual donors and prospects, logging notes and next steps to ensure consistent follow up, donor cultivation, as well as timely proposal and report submission.

  • Execute donation and donor acknowledgement processes and ensure timely acknowledgement to donor and delivery of tax receipts. Record all gifts and donor communication steps in Salesforce. 

  • Manage online donation platform.

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support for the Development Department.

Stewardship of Major Gifts (>$10k) and Individual Donors (<$10k) (15%)
  • Support the execution of the fundraising strategy for High Net Worth Individuals, family donors and smaller individual donors aimed at maintaining current donor revenue. 

  • Support with donor stewardship ensuring donor relations engagement tasks are completed routinely (communications, solicitations, check-ins), logging notes and next steps in Salesforce. Executing various touch points throughout the year, ensuring major donors stay engaged and informed of TeachUNITED activities.

Team Support (5%)
  • Provide support to the CEO and other Development and Communications team projects as needed. 

  • As a growing organization, flexibility, positivity, and teamwork are key. You will take on diverse tasks and have the opportunity to support various development initiatives, skillfully managing projects as they arise. Examples include: research, development of organizational systems, assisting with preparation for meetings and conferences, and other miscellaneous tasks.

  • Support the CEO with TU’s Board of Directors and board meetings including development work, including creating agendas, information packets, and board member action plans.

 


Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of fundraising/communications/marketing experience. Ideally the candidate has proven success in drafting grant proposals or communications content from targeted audiences. Candidates with solid writing experience from other industries will also be seriously considered. 

  • Strong Writing Skills - Demonstrated ability to craft compelling, clear, and engaging written content across various formats, including grant proposals, donor communications, blog posts, and reports. Strong skills in adapting tone and language for different audiences, editing and structuring abilities.

  • Organized with Meticulous Attention to Detail - Excellent organization and time management skills; experience working with a remote team to successfully manage multiple projects with competing timelines. 

  • Self-Starter - Able to prioritize and manage multiple assignments, take initiative, and work independently to a deadline.

  • Goal-Oriented - High degree of proficiency working in a fast-paced, flexible, goal-oriented environment, with the highest level of personal and professional integrity. 

  • Reliable - Ability to consistently manage day-to-day administrative operations with a positive and energetic attitude. Experience and ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple tasks under minimal supervision.


Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (related area not necessary).

  • Native-level fluency in spoken and written English. 

  • Passion for the mission, vision and values of TeachUNITED.

  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM software is a plus.

  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Google Slides, Sheets, and Docs) a plus.

  • Familiarity and experience working with international development and/or education funders a plus.
